Franklin Silver Half Dollar - Background & Design:
The Franklin Half Dollar was first unveiled to the public in 1948, replacing the Walking Liberty Half Dollar. It enjoyed a popular run until 1963, when President John F. Kennedy was assassinated. Just few months later in 1964, the U.S. Mint replaced the Franklin with a new half dollar honoring the fallen president. Had JFK not been killed, this might still be the Half Dollar found in our Mint and Proof Sets!
These rare and collectible Franklin Half Dollars pictures Founding Father Benjamin Franklin on the obverse and the historical Liberty Bell on the reverse. A small eagle was placed to the right of the bell to fulfill the legal requirement that half dollars depict the figure of an eagle. Produced in 90 percent silver with reeded edge, the coin was struck at the Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco mints. As of December 30, 2021, the melt value of the {{detail_product_description}}.50 coin was approximately .37! Get your investment now!
Franklin Half Dollar Grading Scale & Guidelines:
As understood and in relation to condition notes and guidelines, a Franklin Half Dollar in "Very Fine" condition has a number of flat areas visible and noticeable to the naked eye. Most of the roundness is gone to Franklin eyebrow, cheek, and hair, ultimately lacking the detail that would make it XF. The once highly detailed Liberty bell is smooth with some detail across the coin.
Obverse: The hair across the top of head has some detail. Behind Franklin's ear, most the strands of hair have merged. Cheek under eye has lost a majority of roundness and conveys flatness.
Reverse: Most lettering on the Liberty Bell is illegible and indistinct. There could be flatting to beam and strap. The center of the small eagle has lost most of all the feather details.
