Description
1953 Franklin Half DollarObv Die Clash FS-402 (Mislabeled by PCGS as Bugs Bunny FS-401)
Franklin Variety Index: “FVI Bugs Bunny A-1c”
Pedigree: The Franklins of Idaho
PCGS MS65FBL
Fully brilliant and caked with luscious, billowing frost. The "Bugs Bunny" clash has eroded away and no longer shows on the lip. The remaining feature, and the diagnostic of the FS-402, is the single horizontal clash line parallel to the bottom of the nose. The lines running down from the nose are die polishing, only. Though both come from the same die pair, this is clearly the FS-402 and not the FS-401, though both are equally rare in this grade.
The Franklin Variety Index reference breaks down the progressions of the 1953 Bugs Bunny die pair into 4 distinct stages; this is the fourth and final stage, “FVI Bugs Bunny A-1c.”

The Franklin Variety Index, a free variety guide to Franklin half dollars, is the result of a 10-year research initiative by DM Rare Coins. The guide is being released in stages, beginning in December of 2020. Coins attributed to the FVI will be accompanied by a certificate of attribution.
