    Description

ANTIQUE NATIVE AMERICAN - LARGE GOURD RATTLE WITH LEATHER THONG & PROVENANCE -
My parents purchased this piece from the legendary Native American Indian Trader named Lathrop Read, known to all his friends as, "PAT." The large gourd rattle was one of the items my parents bought along their 45 year journey of collecting Native American artifacts beginning in the late 1960's. The rattle was bought by Pat Read from an institution that deaccessioned a portion of their holdings and in my third to last listing photo you can see the previous catalog number written at the top. Note, a leather thong was added by the maker for the musician to secure the instrument to their wrist when playing. The string seen on the top and where the handle attaches appears to be handmade and not commercial twine. The handle remains securely attached and although there are a few cracks that have naturally formed from age this gourd the rattle still makes a beautiful rhythmic sound as a Native American musical instrument. Although I have placed this item in the musical category of 1930's Native American instruments, I truly believe this item is much older.
Many of the artifacts I have posted on E-Bay were purchased around 40 years ago from a 3rd generation TRADER by the name of “Pat Read” who owned shops in Albuquerque, Sante Fe, Rancho de Taos, and Lawrence, Ks., dating back to the 1920’s. See my last two listing photos of a post card with Pat Read. A solid investment for any serious collector. Good luck!
Be sure to check my other listings... as I will soon be posting a number of other Native American artifacts jewelry items as well as collectables in the coming weeks. I always combine items for saving on shipping when they can be shipped safely together. Please wait for my invoice with combined shipping costs.
    CONDITION:
Please view my detailed photos for the actual condition and as part of my description. The rattle measures 7 inches in length and the gourd is 5 inches wide. As mentioned above, over many many years the rattle has developed a few natural cracks, which do not affect on the overall integrity and rarity of this Native American musical instrument. I will include an original copy of Pat Read's post card from the 1950's as provenance of this piece. I will carefully box this item to the winning bidder by Priority Mail.
