Description
Sea urchin, fossil,on original matrix
Name:
Echinocorys scutata forma sulcata
Age: Upper cretaceous, Maastrichtian (about 65 My, just before the famous Cretaceous–Tertiary mass extinction)
Origin: quarry "Ciment Portland Liégeois (CPL)" near Hallembaye, Belgium
Weight : about 500 gr.
Size: 55mm
Condition: complete but deformed. This being said, the test is of top quality (dont' hesitate to zoom on the pictures, you will see all tubercules !).
To the best of my knowledge, Echinocorys scutata forma sulcata is a typical echinoid from this quarry. I have never seen any from anywhere else in the world (even if Echinocorys can be found at a lot of places). Note that forma sulcata is always smaller that the other forma that can be found in the other levels (except forma perconica, but which is from the Campanian, not Maastrichtian). In the quarry, there is only one layer giving the forma sulcata. The main difficulty in this quarry is to find an Echinocorys without any flint on it and not deformed at all: this is nearly impossible, you can believe me.
