Matchlessantiques offers collectors and smiths this  Near Mint 77 lb. Hay Budden Blacksmith Anvil. I hate to see this one go, but I've had this anvil for over a year and it's time to let someone else enjoy it. This Hay Budden tells a story of why this brand still remains one of the most popular and sought after anvil brand ever made. It has the unique HB profile with a nice pointy upswept horn. The whole top half is high grade tool steel tempered by skilled craftsman who forged this anvil on a large steam hammer. It's a beauty just too look at, but it would be a great addition to any blacksmith shop due to the size and performance (small enough for the bench). It will only increase in value with time.
The number of Hay Buddens out there this size and in this condition are few and far between, and most of them are not for sale.
Don't be mislead, it could go for much more than the starting price or more and many bidders wait until the last second to bid. Please take a close look at the pictures.
The trademark reads "HAY BUDDEN, MANUFACTURING CO., BROOKLYN, N.Y." The weight stamp reads "77". The serial numbers are on the front foot and read "214584" which means this Hay Budden was made in 1914. The hardy holes is clean and square and the pritchel hole looks unused.  There an inspector's mark "5" under the horn. There are two heat numbers "02" along the upper side of the body, which is normal for the 3rd style Hay Budden. The edges are almost perfect with only some light chatter. The face has only a few light marks otherwise is perfectly clean. There are no repairs of cracks.

According to Richard Postman's book "Anvils in America"
this Solid Wrought Iron anvil was the third style anvil Hay Budden produced. This style included a major change with the method of making the top half of the anvil. Instead of welding a tool-steel face plate on to the wrought iron body, the entire anvil from the waist up was forged from one piece of open hearth tool steel. The base was forged from one piece of wrought iron. Hay Budden claims that each anvil was produced by the finest American
craftsmen using the best American Wrought Iron available. Postman's book goes on to say that many smiths consider Hay Buddens as the Rolls Royce of blacksmith anvils, and is considered the most popular and sought after American-made anvils ever made.
