Description
Lepidesthes colletti (White 1878):Mississippian
Edwardsville Fm.
Crawfordsville
Indiana. Size: The specimen is 2 ½ in diameter. This is a dorsal view (underside).
Lepidesthes colletti is an unusual early sea urchin (stem group Echinoidea) –
this specimen shows the lower surface with the 'jaws' (Aristotle's Lantern) in place.
Lower Carboniferous (~340 million yrs).
A very rare example of a primitive
sea urchin with jaws. Crawfordsville is famous for its incredible array of
well-preserved crinoids. However, there are other fossils to be
occasionally discovered. One for the specialist collector of non-crinoid echinoderms.
