Description
I collected fossils from the Mount Saint Peter, in Belgium (Europe) during the past 25 years. Now, I need to downsize my collection. Take this opportunity!Sea urchin, fossil, preserved in flint (internal mold)
, on original matrix
Name:
Oolopygus pyriformis
Age: Upper cretaceous, Maastrichtian (about 65 My, just before the famous Cretaceous–Tertiary mass extinction)
Origin: top part of the quarry "Ciment Portland Liégeois (CPL)" near Hallembaye, Belgium
Weight : 400 gr.
Size: see scale bar on the first picture
This is a "museum quality" specimen. I fact, this is the only flint Ollopygus pyriformis I have in my own collection on which we see so well the "star" (ambulacral zone); I'm still not sure why I propose it here ... It is moving in the matrix (due to the space between the internal mold and the external mold), so I guess the internal part could be perfect if one wanted to remove it from the matrix :-) But it's so beautiful on the original matrix (no glue at all !) that I recommend to keep it like this.
To the best of my knowledge, these is a typical species from the Maastrichtian of Belgium and the south of the Netherlands. I have never seen any from another region in the world. T
his one comes from a typical layer that only exists (significantly) at that quarry. People have to break flint stones during hours to find sea urchins in them. In fact, only these flint stones remain, the river "Meuse" having eroded the other sediments from this particular level.
